Jay was ecstatic - he had received the results of his driving test. He is now finally a licensed driver. He felt a sense of pride; he did not even have to go through the driving practice test - that showed how proficient he was at driving a car! Maybe he should go and take up the driving instructor courses too; he believes he can qualify as a driving instructor.

He rode to the driving school on his scooter to collect his results as well as check on other driving courses. One of his friends, Tom, was waiting for his driving practice test. Tom had a very nervous disposition; he panicked easily and this was his third driving practice test. Jay wondered how Tom would manage at the actual test.

Now the next step is to convince his father that he needs his own car. Jay was at his best behavior the next few days, helping his mum with her shopping. He offered to fetch his sister to school, her dancing and art classes. He even cleaned up his room and helped his father with the gardening work. At dinner that weekend, Jay cleverly tested his parents’ mood and found them relaxed and comfortable. He approached the subject of a car for his own use.

His mum was not keen – he was still schooling and furthermore even buying a secondhand car meant additional expenses, not to mention the installment payments, maintenance costs and petrol. She felt that Jay should wait until he is able to contribute towards paying of the car. Jay felt very depressed.

Seeing Jay’s disappointment, his father proposed a compromise. He would consider buying him a car, provided that Jay fulfilled some conditions. First of all, no more stunts with his scooter – Jay had a reputation for chasing neighborhood cats and dogs, frightening them with his scooter. Secondly, he was to help his mum with her shopping, as well as send his sister to school and her other classes. Finally, his midterm academic results would also be taken into consideration. If he did well, that would be a plus. Jay was relieved – at least these are easily achieved conditions.
