It was Saturday morning. I decided to take a jog around the block as usual and then see my friend, who had been my next door neighbour.
I woke up at about 10am, and put on my shoes and stepped outside.
The air was cold. There was no wind. I was wearing a t-shirt, and I was listening to my ipod. I was listening to my favourite song, Papercut by Linkin Park. They were my favourite band.
Once I was ready, I started running. I did two laps around the block. I was pretty tired when I had finished. Of course, two laps around the block was pretty long. It all me about 40 minutes to complete it. I walked back inside my home, and decided to get a drink of water.
The water was refreshing, cold and icy as it slid down my throat and into my stomach. I looked at the time. The time was 10.55am. I decided I should get changed and visit my friend.
I walked across next door and knocked on the door. I was soon welcomed in by my friend, Ryan. He told me that he wanted to travel. I thought it was a good thing for him deciding this. He also wanted to visit the home country his family was from, England.
He told me he had one problem. The problem was that he did not have enough money. I decided to tell him that you should wait longer. But he was very defensive of his homeland. He was really desperate to go. I did not understand why the sudden urge of wanting to travel to England.
I told him that if he was to travel to England, it would take more than 10 hours to arrive at England. He said he knew that in a very defensive manner. Of course he knew that, it was his own country, the country he was bought up from. He had moved to New Zealand when he was 5 years old.
I decided to ask him why he was so defensive about waiting for a couple of weeks before visiting. The next thing he told me, I could not believe. At first I thought he was joking. But then as soon as I saw the expression he had held on his face I realised he was not.
He said that his Father was dead. He was killed because he had been drinking. He was at the pub, and after he had finished drinking, he had wandered out. It had started raining. So he decided to find the nearest shelter, drunk as he was, he saw a waste skip. He decided to climb inside, and use a cardboard box as a shelter against the rain. He fell asleep.
The next few sentences I could not believe. One of the manager of these waste skips said that these skips were for hire. The manager even put up a sign outside the building saying "waste skip hire". Ryan's Dad had jumped into a yard full of waste skips.
Someone hired a skip. The exact skip that Ryan's Dad was sound asleep in the next morning. The manager told one of the workers to empty it. His Dad was crushed to death while he was asleep in a big rubbish truck.
I felt really sorry for my friend. I saw tears crawling down his face. I agreed on him visiting England and attending the funeral that was going to be held there. I decided to give him some money and he accepted the offer and said he would pay me back.
Of course, that's what friends are for, always looking out for eachother.
